CORTINA MK4

It’s fair to say that the atmosphere in the Ford design office was more than a little edgy when it came to penning the replacement for the Mk3 Cortina. Not so much in terms of the monumental task in how to better the Coke-bottle styled best-seller, but rather how it would physically evolve the style of the much-loved Cortina.

The result was revealed on September 29, 1976, with the new Mk4 ushering in a much more contemporary, squared-off look that brought the Cortina bang up to date. It represented a radical departure from the Mk3, but its chiselled appearance wasn’t entirely unexpected as the equivalent German Taunus had debuted with the same bodywork months earlier.
