The film marked the debut of Soumitra into films and what a debut it turned out to be. Apurba Kumar Roy “Apu” (Soumitra Chatterjee) is an unemployed graduate living in Kolkata. He accompanies a friend to the latter’s ancestral village for the marriage of his friend’s cousin Aparna (Sharmila Tagore). On seeing that the prospective groom has a mental disorder, the bride’s mother breaks off the marriage. Apu is forced by the villagers to marry Aparna and after initial reluctance, he agrees.
