Small plates, BIG TASTES
‘You don’t need a lot of experience in the kitchen to make these recipes, because I sure don’t!’ says Chantal Lascaris of her fourth cookbook. Inspired by the lively tapas bars and pintxos bars in the coastal city of San Sebastián, Spain, she knew she wanted to bring this vibrant, flavour-fuelled way of eating back to South Africa.
‘I thought it was such a wonderful way for people to come together and share food – everyone gets such joy out of it. I took traditional Spanish dishes and gave them a unique South African twist because I wanted to be sure that all the ingredients were readily available.’
The concept behind Chantal’s series of All Sorts cookery books – which includes Salads, Healthy Dishes, One-Dish Wonders and now Tapas – is to provide home cooks with simple, healthy and flavourful daily meal ideas.
Chantal loves the way Spaniards eat together. ‘We eat similar foods, thanks to our climates, but where we differ is that they embrace the idea of sitting together as a family and enjoying food together. While we love doing that here in South Africa, especially over the festive season, they do it every single day for every single meal. I think it’s so important to sit together as a family, put the technology away and actually chat and interact with one another.’
