WASHINGTON â A bill to establish election day as a public holiday and create minimum standards for nationwide voting access is expected to die in the Senate on Wednesday afternoon, a move likely to intensify pressure from progressives on Democratic leaders to eliminate the filibuster.
The Freedom to Vote Act, which would also create a pathway for challenging new voting laws in federal court and requires additional disclosures of campaign spending and fundraising, was widely seen by advocates as the best chance to protect voting rights ahead of the 2022 midterm elections.
