DRIVING NORTH, IT GREW BIGGER
Have you ever cruised with a few of your friends and their VWs? Even with five or ten vehicles, the experience can be a ton of fun. Now imagine the enjoyment – and occasionally mayhem – generated by 100, 200 or even 400 cars… It all happened in the 1980s and the event was called California Caravan. Held during Memorial Day Weekend, this annual pilgrimage led Volkswagen enthusiasts from Orange County to Sacramento, home of the Bugorama. Multiple pre-established highway stops allowed additional participants to catch the troop, on a route stretching over 400 miles. As the caravan drove north, it grew bigger and bigger.
