    MY last entry on this page had the sombre title ‘Hope Against Hope’. Seems some folks were troubled by this. A faithful reader sent an email urging me to ‘lighten up’. A friend stopped me in the farmers’ market: ‘Whoa! I think you need a new playlist!’ Her words came back to me this morning as I sat at my desk.

    Jessye Norman was singing Richard Strauss’s heart-breaking September, the haunting words drifting through the room like autumn leaves. Replacing the great soprano with Louis Armstrong is not an easy transition to make, but here goes:
