ASK THE EXPERTS

BATHROOMS: LIGHTING DESIGN

Q We’re renovating our en suite shower room and currently only have one flush ceiling light. How can we introduce a better lighting scheme?

A We would advise integrating some element of wall lighting into the scheme — this could be achieved through a wall unit with integrated lighting, or inexpensive decorative wall lights. This can provide task lighting as well as mood in the evening. Using recessed downlights within the shower area, will create depth and pick up on any tiling and finishes. In addition, another recessed downlight above the basin to highlight the area will enhance the scheme.

These elements will provide the fundamental lighting required, however if the budget would allow, we’d recommend adding in low level lighting such as our Cazalla fittings at floor level for a gentle wash and to provide a night light. If there are niches within the shower area, it’s nice to use lighting here to add interest, such as an LED strip or a miniature downlight.
