ISLAND GEMS

“I like vibrant colours. I try to create pieces that are bold, bright and fun to give people options when they are feeling like being a bit more outrageous.”

WE DREAM IN COLOUR TRINIDAD & TOBAGOi

How did you get started?

Although I have worked on everything from exhibition design to toys, I’ve always been drawn to working on a small scale. Combine that with a fondness for ornamentation and personal expression and this is where I’ve landed.

What has been the most important skill you’ve learned?

Techniques for finishing, such as natural patinas and applying pigment, which create an organic look that is distinctive to our brand.

Which are your favourite materials to use?

We primarily use brass. It’s versatile and has an attitude of its own when left unfinished, but also takes finishes well while remaining affordable.

What’s your favourite piece of jewellery that you’ve made?

The gold cockatoo earrings. They’re so light and I find them very easy to mix in with almost anything in my wardrobe.
