food waste, food insecurity and sustainability are three of the big challenges facing Australia today. The good news is, huge advances have been made in the 10 years since I started writing about minimising food waste at home, and working with charity SecondBite to solve these problems.

Last year, for example, SecondBite collected more than 22 million kilograms of fresh, nutritious food from supermarkets, producers and farms and redistributed this free to more than 1200 charities and NGOs working to combat food insecurity in Australia. Much of this would otherwise have gone to landfill.

This A-Z won’t save you quite as much at home, but with up to one in every three of the bags of shopping we buy ending up in the bin, a few canny tricks can dramatically reduce this horrid home statistic.
