On the steps of Updaam Library, a dour block of history splashed with lurid party paint, a band plays fuzzy psych rock from inside oxygenated pods. The steady backbeat is interrupted by sudden syncopation, however – the bassy boom of a cooked grenade landing in the centre of the crowd, flinging masked revellers in every direction.

Armed to the teeth with automatic weapons, the surviving gig-goers return fire, aiming upwards at the arch of a nearby rooftop. Bullets plink against tiles and chimney stacks, but with a few clumsy dodges the culprit is able to slip away, ready to strike again from a different angle. Eventually the town’s tannoy system squeals into life to address the terrorist, though the tone of the speaker is more sullen than defiant: “Thanks for ruining our show.” Indifferent in their protective bubbles, the band plays on to a diminished audience.
