It was almost 9.30pm when my mobile rang. At the other end of the line was a friend of mine. He got quickly to the point.
“One of our guests shot a roebuck. It walked slowly through the meadow and disappeared into the cover on the far side. There’s a stream there, with a cornfield on the other side.”
Given the late hour, we agreed to start looking for the deer early the next morning. I wouldn’t be tracking the animal myself — I planned to put Wout, one of my trainees, on the case.
