THROWING A DEEP PLATTER

You will need:

Clay – earthenware or stoneware, colour of choice2.3kg (5lb) for batt pad – 3-3.6kg (7-8lb) for platter itself
Tools for throwing – batt, cutting wire, bowl, sponge, rib
2 contrasting glazes in colours to suit your clay type. These can be slop (dipping or pouring glazes) or brush-on
Brushes (if using brush-on glazes)

THROWING A PAD FOR A BATT – A REMINDER OF THE PROCESS

Before you begin:

Be aware that although this isn’t a complicated project, it does require some skill to centre the larger amount of clay. Thrown forms like this one, or with open bases, can’t be lifted off the wheel head, so you must throw on a batt, which in turn requires a very substantial clay pad to secure it and support the weight.
