FETTLING THE FERGIE

The hydraulic pump on a Ferguson is in the bottom of the axle casing so to get to it the PTO shaft has to be withdrawn and the oil drained first.

Disconnect

Before dropping the pump out, the control arm needs to be disconnected, this is achieved by removing the PTO operating lever and the dipstick plate on the other side. The fork needs to be sprung apart to release the control valve rod. This is achieved by undoing one of the retaining bolts.

As it happened, the PTO shaft seal needed replacing anyway, so it was worth combining both jobs. The oil was drained, although it was more like mayonnaise than oil as it had been contaminated with water over the years. Withdrawing the PTO shaft is simple enough, it is
