A DIFFERENT LINE
I was interested to read Anita Sethi’s report on her Pennine Way walk featured in your Walking Special. In it, she stated the Carlisle-Settle railway starts from Alston. It doesn’t; the route runs from Carlisle to Settle or Settle to Carlisle, and is a standard-gauge rail line.
It’s the South Tyne narrow-gauge railway that starts at Alston and runs north for about four-and-a-half miles to Slaggyford.
