On a sunny morning I head to a favourite place in the Norfolk Broads, not just for a walk, but a vicarious adventure.
I have been sailing for 40 years, always preferring to be on the water than in it, but next to it does pretty well. Happily, there are nearly 200 miles of paths through the wide-open Broads National Park and a visit at any time is sure to catch a glimpse of freedom – a sail or a wing, pushed on by the rustling summer breeze or winter chill.
This outing has a purpose; I want to track down entrants in a yacht race and this spot just touches the race’s edge.
The Three Rivers Race is a gruelling sailing passage that covers nearly half of Norfolk’s 125 miles of waterways, which join its 60 broads. I have sailed much of the route over the years in my own boat but without her, I need to chase the race bankside.
