“In seconds, North America had suffered the worst blackout in its history. In about nine seconds, 61,800 megawatts reported. The most widespread blackout in the Northeast U.S., it affected eight states and parts of Canada. This past June, amid another grueling heat wave, about 40,000 blackouts struck the West, raising new concerns about the nation’s strained power grid. Recent outages across the country have prompted new legislation in many states regarding utility oversight and usage.
