THE LONG RUN
Ultrarunning is defined as a challenge that is further than a 26.2-mile marathon or, for the purists, a race of at least 50K or 30 miles. At its most extreme, there are ultrarunning races that last for multiple days and those that call for participants to run as far as they can in 24 hours. There is no typical ultrarunner, although race fields are often packed with those aged over 35 and, increasingly, women. Ultrarunning is hailed for its physical advantages, such as strength, stamina and cardiovascular fitness, as well as the mental health benefits of spending extended time outdoors and amid nature.
