I’ve played a great many card games over the years, from Spellfire to Blood Wars, but no game has hooked me like Magic: The Gathering.

Of course the is you ideally need an opponent to play against and while I was able to teach Melanie the subtleties of , she never took to in quite the same way, so I would often stare morosely at my unused cards, wishing I had someone to play against when I first discovered Richard Garfield’s game. That became less of an issue once Microprose released its own version of in 1997, because it had a brilliant campaign adventure set in the world of Shandalar.
