“IT never came onto my radar that he might be at risk of laminitis,” says Sue Power of Elmo (see box, below), her 12-year-old Welsh section D gelding. “I didn’t think he was fat; a little heavy, maybe, but we were competing regularly and taking part in JumpCross and sponsored rides.”

Last September, however, the day after a competition, Sue noticed that Elmo was “not quite right”. Within days, laminitis was diagnosed.
