HORSES WERE FIRST domesticated 6,000 years ago on the western part of the Eurasian Steppe. This is a harsh, arid, windswept environment with a rough and varied terrain where scrubland and grasses were fibrous and largely low in energy.
Studies of modern wild horses have shown that they will often travel up to 20 miles in a day, foraging for food and water.
