Swallows and swifts

These two birds are often mistaken for one another as they swoop and call high above the ground in summer months, but you’ll have to wait until spring to perfect your identification, as they’re off for some winter sun. Swallows (pictured) and swifts both make long-haul trips over continental Europe to southern Africa, sometimes travelling 200 miles in a day.

Fieldfares and knots

Landing here soon are fieldfares, rare members of the thrush family who fly in from Scandinavia from October onwards. You might hear them before you see them, as they love to gather in noisy crowds throughout most of the British countryside. Knots
