Sunflowers

rovence has rows of purple lavender, Japan has pink cherry blossom, and in the UK we’ve got sunflowers, whose cartoonish colours and playfully bobbing heads bring extra cheer to the countryside in summertime. From late August, swathes of them burst into bloom: they’re mostly grown as a commercial crop, to be crushed into oil or harvested for seeds. There are a few hotspots for up-close sunflower-bathing: Vine House Farm in Lincolnshire offers sunflower walks through its fields, the National Trust’s Rhossili site in Wales has half a million to attract birds and pollinators, and Cairnie Fruit Farm in Fife lets you pick your own – dry a few
