Afternoons at the Club

The cliché is “Some things never change.” Most things do change, though. The way mothers and children spend summer afternoons comes to mind.

Summer was different in the 1950s in Knoxville, Tenn. School was closed for three glorious months. Ballet lessons, piano lessons and so forth were suspended until September. I was a little girl with nothing more to do than spend time with Nancy and Cindy, my two very best friends. Our favorite pastime was swimming in the pool at our parents’ club in Holston Hills. Most days by 1 o’clock in the afternoon
