If you've never owned a tractor before, but are considering buying one, then the Ferguson and Massey Ferguson stable provides you with a wealth of suitable models, in terms of reliability, cost and ease of running. Over the years, the firm has produced some superb tractor models that have truly stood the test of time, and are ideal for anyone considering taking up the tractor-owning hobby.

In this article, I shall be recommending a single model to represent each of the five decades from the 1940s through to the 1980s, and weighing up the pros and cons of each machine. Of course, my choices are inevitably subjective, but I've tried to pick tractors that can be both interesting and appealing to the first-time owner, from each era.

The tractors I've chosen are also all straightforward to look after and the parts supply situation is decent for each. So, hopefully, the five models selected will serve to whet your appetite, fire your enthusiasm and maybe even prompt a purchase.

1940s: Ferguson TED-20

You simply can't beat the original Ferguson TE-20, if you're after a simple, small tractor that's ideal for the beginner. The model was introduced in 1946, and built at Banner Lane, in Coventry, for Harry Ferguson, by the Standard Motor Company.
