Q: After taking my pots out of the glaze kiln I found they are leaking water.
I thought the glaze would seal the pottery.
The fired glaze looks smooth to the eye and feels like a solid unmarred surface to the touch; however, there can be microscopic imperfections in the glazed surface that will allow the penetration of liquids.
Intuitively the concept that a glaze can keep water from reaching the underlying clay body seems reasonable as glaze or glass is often used as a container of liquids.
