Aku are important for food, sport and bait. They are tough fighters and fun to catch. Traveling in large schools, they provide opportunities for lots of action. Live aku are often dragged behind sportfishing boats, as the aku’s dancing and diving are known to attract marlin. For many mainland anglers, an aku is the biggest fish they’ve ever caught, and so it’s unbelievable to them that these fish are used here in Hawai‘i as bait.
