DISMANTLING AND FURTHER ASSESSMENT

I first removed the injection pump from the cambox, at that stage I considered the pump best left totally submerged in a container of diesel. Meanwhile, the injection pump cam followers responded well to a few days soak with penetrating oil. I then commenced totally dismantling the engine, making sure that all components were carefully stowed away ready for further cleaning and assessment.

The remaining lubricant in the base chamber of the lower crankcase comprised mainly an evil black sludge; very little would readily drain off on its own. I resorted to dredging most out by hand, discovering a penknife in the process!
