He’s taken his wife’s name

Q Our daughter married her long-time partner recently. Neither of them had mentioned it beforehand but we weren’t fazed when it became clear he was taking her name rather than the other way round. But it was a bombshell to his relatives. They’re angry with the situation and claiming my daughter is controlling him. Apparently he’s been using her name for ages, partly because he hates his birth name and partly as an equality statement. How can we stop them from spouting abuse?
