Emphasis on the songs illuminates the band in a different light.

“Time to rock some bot,” says a subdued Rivers Cuomo, accompanied by the LA Philharmonic and the Youth Orchestra Of Los Angeles. Once settled at his grand piano, though, the very first tune finds him admitting: “All my favourite songs are slow and sad”. And the album’s subtler, more sensitive approach arguably suits him better than their covid-parked stadium-metal record arriving hot on its heels in one of rock history’s most gymnastic stylistic swivels.
