Happiness, humor, and a heap of hubba-hubba is packed into Peabody Johanson’s dessert book, Holy Sweet!
If you’re looking for a staid tome of technique and history, look elsewhere; this book is about joie de vivre or rather that other foreign phrase, la dolce vita, the sweet life. And Peabody delivers 60 desserts that recall childhood treats, ice creamy decadence, sweet cereal creations, State Fair inspirations, and not-forgotten caloric candy bombs and boozy bingers.
Peabody has curated recipes from her celebrated food blog, Sweet ReciPEAS, into an easy-to-follow, over-the-top kaleidoscope of cakes, pies, cookies, bundts, and bars. It was a difficult choice to select only a few recipes to feature. In the end, the Triple Berry Scone Cobbler, Bourbon Peach Upside-Down Cake, and Sweet Corn Bread Pudding won the day. No special equipment, no exotic ingredients, just down-home food from a down-to-earth blogger but savvy enough to appeal to pro-bakers and pâtissières.
