It was a story born in Rotorua. It was filmed in Rotorua. Its episodes have shots that positively smell like Rotorua, as that steam drifts past. But a curious thing about Vegas – the crime series with $6 million-plus funding, making it the biggest new local television drama of 2021 – is that in its six episodes there’s one word you’ll never hear: Rotorua.

Yes, the title of the series might be a reference to the city’s nickname, “RotoVegas”, earned from its status as a tourist town and one-time epicentre of Māori showbiz. But Vegas is set in a place called Wairoto, “the town where things get steamy”, according to the welcome to sign, which also notes it’s “the home of the haunted owls”.
