You can make a reliable and effective performance (or stock) valve train using near-stock parts. Here’s how to do some basic modifications to your parts to make them more reliable than ever!
Back in the good old days when all of our parts were made in Germany, valve train failures were rare. VW’s all-steel valves combined with flame hardened adjusting screws were a pretty cheap and dependable way to go. You could even build a mild high-performance engine with these simple components.
Occasionally though, the adjuster tip might fail, causing the valve stem to get all chewed up. Other than fully rebuilding the head, all you could do was to install hardened “lash caps” on the valve stems to save the day. Thankfully, we have better solutions today.
