Why won’t eBay help after a buyer conned me?

Q In July, I sold a brand new pair of Bang & Olufsen headphones on eBay for £49.95 (£57.45 including postage). The buyer in France returned them via eBay’s return process saying they were defective. I didn’t examine them properly when they came back, so I refunded the buyer. I’ve since found the buyer swapped his older broken headphones for mine, and eBay won’t help. Can eBay just wash its hands of this criminal act?
