The military coup in Myanmar

ON 1 FEBRUARY the military violently seized power from the Myanmar government and arrested politicians. This is known as a coup d’état (pronounced ku-day-tah) or coup.

The military is led by commander-in-chief Min Aung Hlaing, who has placed the country under a state of emergency for the next year.

Myanmar is a country in South East Asia that borders China, India, Bangladesh, Thailand and Laos. It has over 130 ethnic groups – these are groups of people with different beliefs, cultural practices or religions.

Before the coup, the government was led by the National League for Democracy (NLD). Headed by Aung San Suu Kyi, the NLD won the country’s general election in November, but the military claimed the election was
