Q // I’m a solo traveller looking to explore the ’Stans, but am unsure whether to travel independently or with a tour operator. What advice do you have?

The ’Stans are diverse on many levels: politically, economically, culturally and topographically. For independent travellers, Uzbekistan is a good choice: its capital city, Tashkent, has a metro network; the UNESCO-listed sites of Samarkand, Bukhara and Khiva are accessible by high-speed rail; and family-run guesthouses are common.
