At long last

Arriving at the disco with my boyfriend, I felt like the belle of the ball dressed in a blouse and trendy flares.

‘You look lovely,’ John, then 18, said as we stepped onto the dance floor.

It was 1977, and the DJ played a slow song for us to dance to.

John and I had known each other since we were kids. He lived two doors down from my grandparents, and we used to chat over the garden fence.
