THE ANC and the government have been sucked into spy wars in the past few years. From the time of late former President Nelson Mandela to his successor, Thabo Mbeki, spies have been drawn into the battles for the control of the state and the party.
In the 1990s former apartheid general George Meiring produced a report that was rejected and thrown out by Mandela.
The report alleged a plot to oust the government and included the likes of late US artist Michael Jackson, top ANC figures and Struggle stalwart Winnie Madikizela-Mandela. The report generated a lot of public discourse, but ultimately it never struck Mandela as credible
