Workbench tinkering: Reprofiling wheels to ‘EM’
TWO packs of any of the new Accurascale PTA, JTA and JUA iron ore tippler wagons will produce a neat rake of 10 wagons when an ‘inner’ and ‘outer’ are combined. When tested straight from the box on proprietary ‘OO’ gauge track, the models ran beautifully with excellent tracking through turnouts and curves.
The PTA, JTA and JUA wagon wheel sets are made up of a strong steel axle with both wheels fitted with insulation sleeves. The axles are stepped, with ends of a smaller diameter which makes life a little more interesting. They match RP25-110 and Double O Gauge Association intermediate wheel standards closely. Indeed, the HOP24, PFA and PCA wagon wheels are equally as compliant with RP25-110.
This prompted a rethink on the choice of wheels to convert a rake of 10 Foster Yeoman JUA/JTAs to ‘EM’ gauge to suit my layout. A rake of 10 wagons has 40 axles and 80 wheels. Forty brand-new finescale wheel sets is a significant
