ROBOT WOLVES BEAT BEARS

A Japanese town has launched a new way to protect residents from wandering bears with the introduction of motion-detecting robotic wolves. In Takikawa, on the island of Hokkaido, officials purchased the two ‘Monster Wolves’ following concerns about an increase of bear visits in the neighbourhood. Created by machinery firm, Ohta Seiki, in collaboration with a local university, the robotic canine guards are made from metal, covered with fur to appear realistic and then fitted with motion sensors. When activated, the wolves’ eyes flash red as their heads move around and make a range of howling and machinery noises.
