I ALWAYS assumed ‘rural-based logistics’ was about how to get a lift down to the village pub; would the local farmer be passing with his tractor come opening time? Rural-based logistics, however, is a real commercial thing, rising in value and demand and, essentially, relating to warehouse space. According to Savills, it’s the perfect storm of the demand for new housing in rural areas, coupled with rising consumer demand for online retail; the flight to the country meets an insistence on next-day delivery.

The answer is more warehouses in the countryside, although it would be nice, if naïve, to think that a more sustainable alternative would be about next
