African football in quest to develop more referees

IN 1934, Egyptian referee Mohamed Youssef made it to Italy to take part in the 1934 World Cup as the first African referee ever to officiate at the tournament.

But he did not blow the whistle in any game, making just an appearance in a qualifier between the US and Mexico a few days before the World Cup began.

The wait would continue, until the 1966 World Cup in England when Egyptian Ali Kandil officiated as Chile and North Korea drew 1-1 in Middlesbrough.

The use of African referees continued, until there was finally someone from the continent to take
