THE IMMUNE SYSTEM is the body’s defence against infection and illness (see box, right). Interest in the connection between immunity and nutrition has been on the rise over recent years, with particular focus on the role of the gut, both in early development and in times of challenge throughout life. Certain nutrients are known to influence immunity, like some of the amino acids that contribute to the protein in the diet, including lysine, arginine, and glutamine.
