What’s the big deal if someone refuses to shake hands?

ABOUT 10 years ago, I was waiting with my father in the reception area of a medical specialist’s practice at a large Durban private hospital.

Pinned on the door leading to the consulting room was a notice which stated: “The doctor does not shake hands with women. Please do not be offended.”

I had not come across such a blatant injunction before. I suspected it had something to do with the Islamic religion – the doctor was a Muslim.

The doctor was not too friendly. I accepted this – after all, he is not a pop
