Traditional IRAs have been around for 46 years, with the enabling legislation passed by Congress in 1974! Roth IRAs started in 1997 as part of the far-reaching Taxpayer Relief Act of that year. Over time many of the rules and requirements have been modified, like required minimum distributions (RMDs), and it’s likely that further changes will be made to keep up with the needs of the millions of Americans whose primary source of retirement income is held in IRAs.
