Howard’s 35 of the best Chablis 2019s

1 WINE OF THE VINTAGE Domaine William Fèvre, Côte Bouguerots, Chablis Grand Cru Bougros 96

POA Davy’s

From Fèvre’s tiny plot on the steepest part of Bougros, Côte de Bouguerots adds even more complexity and drive to a stunning site. There is such finesse here, allied with density on the palate, savoury characters and perfectly balanced acidity. A very mineral expression of grand cru Chablis. A great grand cru with a very long future ahead. Drink 2023-2035 Alcohol 13%

2 Albert Bichot, Domaine Long-Depaquit, Moutonne, Chablis Grand Cru Monopole 95

£80.17 (ib) H2Vin, Stannary Wine

Moutonne is one of Chablis’ top expressions and the 2019 will be another in a long list of memorable vintages. Although not the final bottling, it is clear that there is great power here, combined with finesse and a lightness on its feet. Savoury, umami notes on the finish. Wood is a little evident now but will integrate beautifully once in bottle for six to 12 months. Drink 2022-2032 Alc 13%

TOP QUALITY Albert Bichot, Domaine Long-Depaquit, Chablis Grand Cru Les Blanchots 95

£35.67 (ib) H2Vin, Stannary Wine

The east-facing slopes of Blanchots have added an extra zip to the palate in this grand cru. An elegant wine already drinking well, but with so much more to come. White clay is interspersed here with blue clay, adding to the mineral flavours and creating a grand cru with great finesse. Highly successful in 2019. Drink 2022-2032 Alc 13%

Barolo 2020
There is a attractive blue butterfly that is known to lay its eggs in the violets of Serralunga in Barolo, in Italy’s northwest. Until a decade or so ago, however, as relayed to me by Isidoro Vajra, who tends the vines on his family’s Piedmont estate
