AS A PROFESSIONAL writer, I’ve always tried to write plain English that’s easy to understand. Unfortunately, lawyers don’t do the same, as I was reminded last year when I sold one house and bought another. I’m not sure what trainee solicitors are taught at law school, but expressing themselves clearly and concisely in written English doesn’t appear to be a required skill.
The same is true of civil servants who pen legislation. I have been reading through the Environmental Protection Act 1990, Part VIII, Control of Dogs.
