The grouse now have some peace and the drudgery of replenishing 1,000 or more grit stations may well be over for most keepers. The grit has become one of those must-do tasks, but it’s a pretty soul-destroying job trundling to and fro countless times over the grid system on the moor.

The next main job, trapping, would in most years be some light relief, but for a number of grouse keepers this year it may not be
