What happens when kids direct their own educations? Do they stay in pajamas and play video games all day? Of course not! Well, maybe sometimes. Do they learn anything? Always, according to the philosophy of unschooling.
Unschooling, also known as child-led learning, is rooted in the idea that humans are born with a natural drive to learn. Just as most babies learn to talk and walk without being taught, unschooling advocates believe that children learn best when they follow their own curiosity, without schools, teachers, or parents dictating what they do. Adults provide enriching materials and opportunities. But kids lead the way.
A Movement Begins
The unschooling movement originated in the early 1970s when teacher and school reformer John Holt called for parents to remove their children from school and let kids’ interests guide their learning. At the time, the soft drink 7-UP was advertising itself
