You’re car people. Of course you are, or you wouldn’t be here right now reading a car magazine. And as such, you no doubt watch a lot of car makeover programmes. Producers of those love to ramp up the tension with segments about missing parts, apparently catastrophic rust that make a project uneconomical to continue and engines that won’t start before we cut to a commercial and come back only for it start on the second turn of the key and the rust be fixable after all. Makers of these shows also love to imply there’s a deadline that absolutely must be met or those financing the build will lose their shirt.

The thing is, we all know it’s complete and utter nonsense. Cars only take days to restore from the ground up in TV land and nothing ever, ever(!) actually runs according to plan in the real world.
