LOVELY LAYERS
Driving from Benalla to Melbourne one morning, Daren Fawkes spotted some lovely layers of mist in the valley. “I hurried to take the photo and forgot to change the white balance, but the resulting brownish tone creates a pleasing atmosphere,” he says. “The cow and calf wandered into view and added a point of interest to the image.”
This scene was well spotted. It was the right time and the right place! What is particularly wonderful is the differently angled layers of landscape, light and mist – a great perspective and strong atmosphere. The cow and calf in the foreground are a nice bonus. Colour may have been good – it is just possible to see a little green in the foreground grass – but the monochromatic effect works well. There is some white spottiness or highlights, probably from moisture, on the left and in the foreground grass, and some colour noise in the mist, but this does not detract in any way from the overall impact.
SAIMA’S TIP: With an unbelievably good scene, shoot as many variations as possible
